Zhang and Liu received Ford-MSU Alliance grant

Mi Zhang, Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Michigan State University, and Alex X. Liu, Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at Michigan State University, have been awarded a Ford-MSU Alliance grant for a project on developing a low-cost contactless respiratory and heart rate monitoring system, which can serve as a key component of non-intrusive in-vehicle health monitoring systems in smart vehicles. Existing in-vehicle health monitoring technologies either use video cameras, which are intrusive, or use sensors embedded inside seats or steering wheels, which require constant physical contact with human bodies. This project aims to develop a low-cost contactless scheme that uses in-vehicle speakers and microphones into an active sonar system to continuously and passively monitor the driver and passengers' respiratory and heart rates.
