CSE Alum Wins Chevy Social Media Road Trip Challenge
March 25, 2010Henry Balanon (BS Comp Sci '03) and teammates Brandon Chesnutt, Dave Murray, and Audrey Walker - Team Detroit - were winners of the recent South by Southwest (SXSW) road trip challenge. Team Detroit set out on March 8 to compete against seven other teams of social media experts from across the United States. Each team traveled from their hometown to SXSW, the world's largest interactive Web conference in Austin, Texas, behind the wheel of one of Chevy's newest products. The competition involved a mixture of road trip/scavenger hunt contests; clues along the way guided everyone to a common point in Austin for a welcome reception. Chevy rewarded the group who completed the most "challenges," or tasks, and created the most Web buzz on the way.
Team Detroit's tasks included reading to kids at a library, leading an aerobics class, and finding someone to teach them a line dance. The group posted videos and photos from each of the challenges they completed. As winners, Team Detroit received a Chevy-sponsored Tweetup (an in-person gathering of the twitter community) for Detroit. The team's efforts contributed toward bringing Detroit's social medial scene together to form virtual conversations and online engagement within the community.
